The municipality is bordered to the north by the Municipality of Viana do Castelo, to the east by Barcelos, to the south by Póvoa de Varzim and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean.
The city has been designated in tourism promotion as ''a privilege of nature'' since it borders the ocean, the river, the plain and the hill of Faro.
The Municipality of Esposende follows the Atlantic coast for 16 km.
The coastal strip is protected by the rules of the North Coast Natural Park.
Much of the county's territory is located on the plains.
It is bounded to the north by the Neiva River and divided in half by the Cávado River.
